Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata)
Originating from South America, Muscovies are the only domestic ducks in the United States that are not derived from Mallard stock. Wild Muscovies coloration is black and white, but domestication has produced many different colors. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.
This is the mousepad that sports the image of the Muscovy Duck. Details on the mousepad are available at the store link above "Other Birds" or you can click on the mousepad itself.
Pekin Duck
The Pekin Duck (Anas domesticus) is the common white duck. Donald Duck of cartoon fame and the AFLAC Duck from TV commercials are two famous examples. They are descendants of the Mallards. The first Pekins were introduced into the United States and Great Britain in 1873 and is today the most popular duck used for egg and meat production. I caught this little duck in the early morning light as she was getting a drink from the pond. Her breed may be "common" but she is a beauty.
