Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
Standing close to four feet high, the Great Blue Heron is one of the most majestic of birds. Their diet is mostly fish but it will eat a variety of insects and even small animals. Like the Great Egret, it is loner. Unlike the cranes, the Great Blue flies with it’s neck contracted. They can be found as far north as Alaska and as far south as the West Indies. All of the Great Blue Heron photographs were taken in Lake County, Florida.

All of the Great Blue Herons on this page were taken in and around the pond in back of our home in Lake County, Florida. Usually, if I just sit out on the bank of the pond quietly with my camera, the herons will ignore me and pass by within a few feet.

The photo below left is of a heron that perched on the roof of my neighbor's house. Makes a magnificent weather vane, doesn't he?
