Barred Owl (Strix varia)

Identified by the pattern of bars running across its chest and the contrasting streaks down it’s belly. It’s a rather large, stocky owl and seems to prefer dense woods and particularly swampy forests here in Florida. It can be found in abundance all over the eastern half of the United States and as far south as Honduras and as for north as the southern half of Canada. It is a dark-eyed owl and the sexes are alike except the female is usually the larger.

Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)

This large owl is easily identified by its large ear tufts that resemble horns. It’s found from the Arctic to the tropical rainforests and from deserts to city parks. It is the most common owl in North America. The Great Horned Owl is the ony animal that regularly eats skunks. It is also a major predator on other, smaller owls, as well as many other birds.
