A large sandpiper breeding in freshwater habitats in the western US and in the Atlantic coast in the eastern US. It has a long straight bill and long, bluish-gray legs. They have a pale eye ring and a white eyebrow. Willets are a drab, speckled bird when on the ground but become conspicuous in flight. From below, the black wings with a white stripe contrast strongly with the body.
They are found feeding on salt marsh mudflats, sandbars, oysterbeds, sandy beaches, and rocky shores. They can be found solitary or in large groups.
